Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Newborns? Common Myths, Answered

Newborn chiropractic care is one of the most misunderstood parts of what we do, so let’s address the myths directly, honestly, and without exaggeration.

Myth: newborn adjustments involve the same force as adult adjustments. This is not true. The technique used on a newborn involves light, sustained pressure from a fingertip, roughly the same amount of pressure you would use to check the ripeness of a tomato. There is no twisting or popping involved at all.

Myth: chiropractic care is unnecessary for a baby who has not had any problems. Birth itself, even a smooth, uncomplicated delivery, puts real physical stress on a newborn’s spine and nervous system. Many parents choose an assessment simply to check how their baby’s nervous system is functioning after that process, the same way a general checkup makes sense even when nothing seems wrong.

Myth: any provider can safely treat a baby. This one matters. Dr. G has completed over 1,000 hours of specialized training in pediatric and prenatal chiropractic beyond his standard chiropractic degree. Newborn anatomy and development are genuinely different from adult anatomy, and that additional training is what makes gentle, appropriate care possible.

Myth: chiropractors just guess where to adjust. At Smith Elite, every visit starts with a CLA INSiGHT scan, which gives us objective, technology-based data on how your baby’s nervous system is functioning. We do not adjust based on assumption, and if the scan does not show a reason to adjust, we do not adjust.

If you have specific questions or concerns about your newborn’s care, we would rather answer them directly than have you rely on secondhand information. Schedule a consultation and scan, and see exactly what we look for and why.
